Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner so that they could remain alive. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. But she quit school after just two years of school to take on a acting career. Her path did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. She then worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working as an usherette during the day while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She studied drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
